Aaron introduced the lesson talking about discovering Gisborne and places we know eg kaiti hill, town clock, museum.
Gisborne never looked like this...let's go back in time to how it looked hundreds of years ago. No people but all types of animals, living creatures. Where would these creatures live in our area? Where is your animal going to be happiest?
All the creatures depend on each other. Perfect place for them to live. Until something happened?
Maori people arrived....a waka called Horouta came. An important Chief was on the waka, Paoa. His friends also were Kiwa and Hinehakirirangi (who first planted the kumara).
Ahuahu up the coast was where a man called Toi came from and Toi wanted some kumara. He asked his friend Paoa to get some for him.
They travelled around and landed in Ohiwa but the Horouta broke on a rock so they had to beach there and fix the waka. The crew split up into 3 groups and Paoa went off to find the perfect tree to fix it. The second captain Kiwa went to Gisborne. Pohini was the leader of the group who found food for the others.
Paoa travelled inland and he used the rivers to guide him and he followed one all the way to Mangatu (Maunghaumi). He saw a tree on this mountain but he needed to get the tree back to the Horouta so they cut it down and Paoa did a mimi to float it down. He made two rivers. The river that went to Whakatane is the Motu and the one that came to Gisborne is the Waipaoa. Kiwa had already fixed the boat and he travelled back to Gisborne and this is why Tairawhiti is called Turanganui- a-Kiwa (the resting place of Kiwa). He waited here for Paoa. This is where they made the first kumara gardens and the Maori people came and settled here. One of the settlements was called Heipipi Pa.
Another settlement was on Kaiti beach (Maia who started the settlement) floated over there on a raft of gourds. He was very grumpy!
There was a big rock in between the two settlements. Taiau was a girl who rowed her waka across to take Maia over to the other settlement but he was angry with her for not listening to him so he killed her. This rock is called Te Toka a Taiau.
The Endeavour arrived shortly after this. Captain Cook came to make friends and learn about the world here. He also needed water and food for his crew.
What do you think the Maori people thought when his ship arrived?
Some of his sailors took a boat across to meet the Maori and because they couldn't understand each other the Maori people felt threatened and some people got shot. Captain Cook sailed away naming Gisborne Poverty Bay.
The next group of people arrived on a ship were whalers and hunters. They settled and made money from whaling etc married Maori women and set up shops in 1831. This shop worked as a trading post and eventually Heipipi Pa disappeared, more pakeha people came and settled.
The big ships that came in brought supplies but the big rock TeToka a Taiau kept them from entering the harbour so they blew up the rock. They also blew up the island next to sponge bay and used the rock to lay the foundations for the Gisborne Wharf.
The courthouse park is where Heipipi Pa used to be and there is waka statue is there to represent this.
